December 23-25, 5 and 8:30 p.m. shows
The annual “Jewish comedy on Christmas” evening of entertainment and great food has attracted some of the most hilarious comedians over the years, and this year the headliner is Elayne Boosler, who has performed on “The Tonight Show” and Showtime specials. Joining her are comedians Eddie Sarfaty, Alex Edelman and Lisa Geduldig. The setting for this dinner and cocktail show is New Asia Restaurant, one of the city’s best Chinese restaurants. With Yiddish proverbs tucked into fortune cookies, plan on a smashingly enjoyable evening of farewells to this year and a welcome to the year of 2017, which I predict will be extra happy and exciting.

Count Down to 2017 at the Asian Art Museum
December 31, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
One of the most fascinating ways to ring in the New Year is to join the Asian Art Museum community for their annual Japanese bell-ringing ceremony. You too can take a swing at a 2,100 pound, 16th century Japanese temple bell. This inspiring ceremony will include a purification ritual and chanting of the Buddhist Heart Sutra. Reverend Akiba will begin the bell ringing and participants may then take turns ringing the bell to leave behind any unfortunate experiences, regrettable deeds, or ill luck from the previous year. The bell will be struck 108 times on New Year’s Eve to usher in the New Year. While you wait your turn, add your design to the museum’s 1,000 origami cranes and make a wish for the New Year. First come, first served. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend a day at the Asian Museum of Art (one of my favorite museums in San Francisco) and partake in and learn about the rich ethnic cultures in the Bay Area. Pick up tickets to ring the bell at the entrance of Samsung Hall. To ensure you have a chance to ring the bell, it is recommended that you arrive at Samsung Hall no later than 12 PM.

Lina Broydo immigrated from Russia, then the Soviet Union, to Israel where she was educated and got married. After working at the University in Birmingham, England, she and her husband immigrated to the United States. She lives in Los Altos Hills, CA and writes about travel, art, style, entertainment, and sports. She hardly cooks or bakes, with no borsch or piroshky on her home cooking menu. Therefore, she makes reservations and enjoys dining out, mostly sushi.
