The Best Arias in the Area

Get ready for the Opera’s fall season to enrich your cultural life in the Bay Area.

From the spectacular Opera Ball on September 8th,  followed by the September 10th “Opera in the Park” at the Robin Williams Meadow in the Golden Gate Park and the season’s grand opening with Il Trovatore with the addition of the highly anticipated  (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, your repertoire of amazing performances and your closet of glamorous gowns and tuxedos will be filled to the max. And it all starts in September of 2023.

“Il Trovatore” by Giuseppe Verdi. September 12, 17,20, 23, 29; October 1 2023. Il Trovatore marks the beginning of a new chapter in Eun Sun Kim’s tenure as San Francisco Opera’s music director and the brilliant conductor. Familial revenge runs deep in Giuseppe Verdi’s towering opera of grand passions stymied at every turn. Expect sublime arias, passionate ensembles, the rousing Anvel Chorus and a magnificent cast of Arturo Chacon-Cruz, George Petean, Angel Blue and Anita Rachvelishvili.

“(R)evolution of Steve Jobs” by Mason Bates and Mark Campbell; September 22, 24, 27, 30; October 3, 7, 2023. A device brought the world to our fingertips, connected us in unparalleled ways, and streamlined communications. But for the man behind the machine, life was far from streamlined. Kevin Newbury directs this cutting-edge opera starring John Moore, Sasha Cooke, Bille Bruley and Wei Wu under the masterful baton of Michael Christie.

“Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner  October 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, November 1, 2023. He arrived from her dreams to save her from a nightmare. Can Elsa trust her life and love to a stranger whose mysterious identity is eating away at her. Maestro Eun Sun Kim begins her journey through Wagner with David Alden directing and featuring Brian Mulligan, Judit Kutasi, Julie Adams and Simon O’Neil.

“Omar” by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels November 5, 7, 11,15, 17, 21, 2013. A true story of an indomitable faith enshrined in a two-hundred-year-old autobiography and an opera acclaimed by The New York Times as a “sweeping achievement.” Writing is the preservation of identity in this new opera from Grammy-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens and composer Michaels Adels. With Jamez McCorkle as Omar and under the baton of John Kennedy.

“The Elixir of Love” by Gaetano Donizetti November 19, 24, 26, 29; December 5, 9, 2023. With no money, no confidence, and no hope of winning the hand of the alluring hotel owner Adina, the young waiter Nemorino entrusts his chance of romance to a quack salesman and a dubious bottle of… magic elixir. The creative team of Director Daniel Slater and designer Robert Innes Hopkins create a sun-soaked world where a cast of Pene Pati, Slavka Zamecnikova and conductor Ramon Tehar promise grand cru magic.
