Prodigy composer/musician Alma Deutscher makes her international operatic conducting debut in a lavish Opera San José production of her landmark opera, Welcome back Alma! Opera San José, in association with the Packard Humanities Institute, will host the international operatic conducting debut of prodigy composer/musician Alma Deutscher, who will take the podium for a lavish production of her landmark opera, Cinderella.

Just in case you forgot the history of Cinderella – here is a reminder: Based on the classic fairytale, this family-friendly work is reset at an opera company run by a scheming stepmother. In this production, Cinderella is united with her prince not because a glass slipper fits, but with the beginning of a melody only she knows how to continue. In 2017, California Theatre audiences watched the sold-out American premiere of the already internationally acclaimed Cinderella by the then 13-year-old composer, in a production supported by the Packard Humanities Institute (PHI).

Opera San José and PHI again join forces to welcome Deutscher back, with the now 17-year-old taking the baton in this pivotal moment in her career. Casting includes Natalia Santaliz as Cinderella, Joey Hammod-Leppek as The Prince, Ben Brady as The King, Stacey Tappan as Griselda, Julia Dawson as Zibaldona, Rena Harms as The Stepmother, Megan Esther Grey as Fairy, and Lance LaShelle as The Minister. SF Symphony Celebrates the Day of the Dead: Dia De Los Muertos at a Festive Tradition of Music, Art, and Family Fun

Los Altos History Museum Highlights Wallace Stegner’s Literary Legacy

November 10, 2022 through May 5, 2023

Focusing on the Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s legacy on the creative writing world, and the Los Altos area in particular,  and co-produced by The Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford University, “A Society to Match its Scenery: Wallace Stegner’s Local Legacy” is on display at the museum’s J. Gilbert Smith House for the next 5 months.

The Museum’s outdoor exhibit, “Wallace Stegner: A Path to Conservation,” concentrates on Stegner’s work in protecting wild places and preserving the landscape. Stroll the Conservation Pathway around the Museum using QR codes with Smartphones to hear recordings of, and about, Stegner who lived in Los Altos Hills and published eight novels, 14 non-fiction books, and six collections of articles and stories. His book “All the Little Live Things” (1967), set in Los Altos Hills, discusses the ongoing battle between improving land for conservation’s sake and developing it for urban uses. This is a priceless opportunity to view the additional exhibit which features photographs of Stegner during the time he lived in Los Altos Hills, a collection of first editions and autographed copies of his books, and a reading nook. Don’t miss it! Enrich your knowledge about one of the most respected and famous visionary conservationists and writers of our area.
