О нелегальной иммиграции

Пару недель назад  в редакцию нашей газеты позвонили из организации New America Media и попросили высказать в письменной форме, на английском языке, мнение по поводу использования или запрещения использования выражения «нелегальный иммигрант» как оскорбительного для  тех, кто пересек границу незаконно. Я высказала свою точку зрения и обосновала ее. Вот текст моего ответа:

My family and I immigrated legally from the Soviet Union, from a country where the law almost didn’t exist. Now this country doesn’t exist.

When we came to the US, I was very surprised to see that people do have laws and that the majority are lawful citizens. I learned how to live when law does exist.

I start with this point because there are two different lifestyles: with law and without law.

I have to know for myself: if the law does exist, I will do my best to follow it. If it doesn’t, well… trust me, I will find my way around. I will not like it, but I will have no choice.

If we have a law that requires certain legal paperwork to be done in order to enter the US legally, it’s the LAW for me. I followed it and my kids will. If there are some people who don’t follow it, they enter illegally. I am not judging them, I have some friends who did it. I understand them very well: this is really a great country which gives you the unique opportunity to become who you are, to work and live the life you want.

But they entered illegally. Let’s face it. Let’s call things as they are. If we try to find “politically correct” substitute words, well… Orwell already wrote about it in “1984,” didn’t he? I don’t want to live in an Orwellian world. I came from it. I was there and I hate it.

So we use the direct and honest word, “illegal,” because it is actually illegal to cross the border of any country without proper documents. Try to do this with Mexico from its southern border. Try to do it with China, Russia, or any country for that matter.

Basically, all Russian-language media use the term “illegal.” Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. It’s facing real life facts. We don’t think that we have to hide behind some other words. Why hide? How long will we have to hide?

I am saying this while keeping in mind that I personally would do my best to help my few illegal friends to get their papers here. At the same time, I do understand that what is good for me or my friends, might be suicidal for the country. I see the contradiction. It’s sad, but I see it.

So, what do I think about the campaign to stop using the word “illegal”? First, it’s a stupid campaign, it’s a waste of time and money, it’s giving people the bad impression that “law may or may not exist” and that it’s not so bad to do illegal things.

Well, theoretically speaking, if I know it’s not so bad then guys, I will start cheating right now. Why not? The law doesn’t exist, I have to play by my own rules. Here is my example: If law doesn’t exist in one field, why it should exist in another? If I didn’t stop at a stop sign and the police came, why not bribe them (as we usually did in the Sov. Union). Better to give the police officer $200 than to pay $350 for the ticket – that would be my logic in the space without law.

Police officers would have a different logic: why not stop 5 people like me during the day and they will have an additional $25000 per month (which is 5 times more than their salary, not bad, right?) And where does this chain of events lead? Yes, to a corrupted society, to mafia, to black market, to suicide of the country.

One more thing: some countries put certain educational restrictions on immigration. People who come must have at least a high school education. If a country accepts millions who have not been educated in the technological century then I am not sure what future this country has. Frankly,  this country has no future.

I think I’ve answered the question why I would not join the campaign: I want to live in healthy real world, not in the surreal world where “Peace is war”.

Political correctness is killing this country slowly but surely. Don’t kill the messenger. A lot of people think like us, even in San Francisco, just they don’t have the courage to say it openly and loudly. We do, because we have already been in an Orwellian world and we are sick of it. We know that that there is nothing more scary than living in an Orwellian society. We can lose a career, money, but not back to Orwell, no way!

Скорее всего, мы бы не стали публиковать приведенный выше текст в «Кстати», если бы в прошлую субботу наш губернатор Джерри Браун, сердечная и трогательная забота которого о простых американцах так пропагандировалась во время предвыборной кампании, не издал законопроект The California Dream Act  (AB131), согласно которому  тысячи школьников Калифорнии, находящихся в стране нелегально, теперь на законном основании смогут получить финансовую помощь для поступления в государственные колледжи.

Комиссия по оказанию помощи студентам (The California Student Aid Commission), учреждающая гранты (Cal Grants), подсчитала, что 5,462 нелегальных студента смогут получить от штата помощь на 2013-14 учебный год в размере чуть более чем $13 миллионов.

Для налогоплательщиков это обойдется на самом деле  в сумму более $13 миллионов ежегодно, поскольку студенты-нелегалы еще и освобождаются от уплаты  за обучение как студенты из малоимущих семей, тогда как другие получат право на помощь из иных фондов (CSU, UC). В частности, UC выделяет $4-$5 миллионов в год, сообщила юрисконсульт университета Nadia Leal-Carrillo. Противники предупреждают, что Dream Act станет кошмаром для налогоплательщиков. Калифорния находится в весьма плачевном финансовом положении, закрываются парки, сокращаются расходы на малоимущих граждан США, и на этом фоне губернатор-гуманист Д. Браун подписал свой законопроект. Более того, студенту-нелегалу надо показать среднюю оценку В, чтобы поступить в Беркли, между тем как для остальных это 4.19 (median grade for freshmen was 4.19), т.е. для нелегальных иммигрантов стандарты снижаются. Как вы полагаете, за чей счет это происходит?
