Избранные места из переписки с поклонником Сандерса

Весь мир насилья мы разрушим до основанья, а затем мы наш, мы новый мир построим: кто был никем, тот станет всем!

На самом деле это не избранные места, а почти вся переписка, потому что я не планирую потратить больше времени на данного человека.

Но вернемся к началу: пару месяцев назад я говорила с девушкой, журналисткой из вашингтонского журнала. Она хотела узнать, как эмигранты из СССР относятся к Трампу и почему они за или против него. Поговорили кратко по телефону. Потом она сказала, что приедет в Сан-Франциско, попросила организовать ей встречи с людьми.

Я сама с ней встретилась, позвонила Тане Менакер, она собрала у себя знакомых. Обещание девушки прислать материал до публикации выполнено не было… Но я, собственно, и не ждала выполнения обещания. В разговоре со мной девушка сообщала о своей абсолютно нейтральной позиции, а сам материал показал, что она не совсем нейтральна, что не очень поняла многие вещи, которые ей были сказаны. Не поняла и примитивнейшим образом интерпретировала.

На сайте возникла дискуссия, в которой я четко обозначила свою позицию… Замечу – позицию, поддержанную многими американцами. Но мое внимание обратил на себя вот этот человек, именующий себя так: Zdlax. Почему он? Его комментарии отражают то, с чем сталкиваются сегодня многие родители в разговоре с выросшими детьми.

Я знаю, для многих из вас это очень печальные разговоры, где вас не слышат в принципе, не хотят ничего обсуждать. Где толерантность проявляется ко всем и ко всему, кроме вас и ваших аргументов, основанных на знаниях, истории и опыте… Где спор исключен как жанр. Где вы приравниваетсь к динозаврам доледникового периода, на вас смотрят с легким презрением из далекого прекрасного будущего…А вы видите, что их будущее – ваше прошлое. И понимаете, как страшно повторяется история.

Недавно я узнала новую категорию моих сверстников – родителей. Они тоже понимают всё, не дураки, но настолько хотят быть cool, настолько хотят остаться друзьями с детьми, выглядеть моложе, настолько боятся возразить им и показаться старомодными, что одни замолкают, глотая горечь, избегая политических тем, а другие глушат свои инстинкты и свое знание и начинают повторять чушь за хорошими, но очень наивными детьми, чье доброе сердце используется вовсю, которым промыли мозги в колледжах… Чушь о «плохом» социализме, который мы строили, и «хорошем», который построят они. И мгновенный пример социализма – вся Западная Европа, в которой срочно обнаружен социализм. Потому что «молодежь лучше знает, наверное». А то, что это не традиционный конфликт отцов и детей, а конфликт между знанием истории, реальным опытом и наивным идеализмом, даже не обсуждается.

И никого при этом не смущает, что тов. К. Маркс, могильщик капитализма, никогда сам, по сути, не зарабатывал и жил то на деньги богатых родителей жены, буржуа, то на деньги своего друга-капиталиста тов. Ф. Энгельса.

Как-то вот этот элемент – никогда не работал – является объединяющим для многих социалистов-коммунистов, вы заметили? Добрые души, искренние люди, а вот работать – нет, не хотят. Мир осчастливить – пожалуйста, нас организовывать, кричать на митингах – да, а регулярно ходить на работу, бизнес открыть, дать другим работу, помогать какой-то бедной семье из своего кармана – нет-нет, слишком много хлопот.

Мне хочется сказать вот этой, последней категории родителей: «Я вас понимаю и очень, очень вам сочувствую. Даже не знаю, как бы я жила, если бы мои дети позволили себе промыть мозги. Да, хочется быть cool. И не хочется казаться застрявшим в 20-м веке бараном. Но вспомните…  Когда наши дети были маленькими, мы считали своей обязанностью научить их не совать проволочки в розетку, не лезть на высоченное дерево и не кататься там на тонкой ветке, мыть руки, объясняли, почему нельзя питаться одними конфетами, не так ли? Мы делали это, потому что хотели сохранить им здоровье и жизнь. Думаете, им нравился этот кошмар – чистка зубов, отказ от пирожных, приход домой не позже 11 вечера? Как бы не так!

Дети выросли. И сейчас другие опасности, к сожалению, тоже угрожают их жизни и здоровью. Другие «конфетки», объевшись которых можно потерять свободу и даже жизнь. Эти «конфетки» называются либерализмом и толерантностью – слова, у которых леваками украдено их первоначальное значение и наполнено новым – ложью и двойным стандартом. Этим кормят наших детей в колледжах. И, на мой взгляд, это гораздо опаснее лишней «Мишки на севере» или третьего пирожного «Наполеон».

А вы остались родителями, помните? Нет, я не призываю к кулачным боям. Я призываю к терпению в попытках пробиться к душе. Или, по крайней мере, к тому, чтобы остаться собой, не стараясь быть cool, не лгать себе и им. Потому что наши дети все же не дураки, и жизнь их научит… Они увидят, что социализм не способен сам себя обеспечить, а когда система начинает разлагаться, нет выхода, кроме как тоталитаризм. Они спросят вас (или не спросят, а подумают): «Если вы знали, почему молчали?!»

И, если для разрушения много ума не надо, можно просто ничего не делать, то для созидания нужен тяжелый труд ума, души и рук.

Так что напомните деткам, что тот, кто был никем, никогда не станет всем.

I was born in the 80’s at the tail end of the Soviet Union and I loved it. My parents brought me to the U.S. in the 90’s to escape the «free and democratic» Russia. They were upwardly mobile academics, but 1991 crushed everything. To hell with democracy. It is the cause of most of our problems in the 21st century. Democracy is the reason nothing gets done on climate change. Democracy is the reason the U.S. invaded Iraq.

Democracy is the reason we do not have open borders. Democracy is the reason religion is still respected rather than laughed off of history’s stage.

Democracy legitimates and ratifies the stupidity of the citizenry, their incessant clinging to God and Nation and other obsolete traditions. We could have robots doing all the work people are forced to do, but no, we still have politicians pandering to the Calvinist hard work fetish of the people.

I hope we Millennials annihilate the social world we were given so we can recreate it in our own modern image.

My daughter was also born in the late1980s, but she is smarter than you. Why? Because she understands that the things kids see around them are not exactly as they appear.

What do you know about the Soviet Union that you say «I loved it»?

You only know who was playing with you in the sandbox. That is all you know. Nothing more, my dear.

If you were older, you might remember your friend’s father who was tortured to death by the gang who demanded money from his small business. Or you might remember waking up at 5AM, going to the store at 6AM to stand in line until 8AM when the store opened and you could get milk or bread. Or maybe you remember rationing food. No? Maybe because your parents did the best to keep your childhood cloudless, maybe they didn’t eat whatever they managed to buy on the black market, because they wanted you to have it.

You have a very familiar syndrome to what the bolsheviks had. «We will ruin everything and we will build a brave new world.» I hate to disappoint you, but you are repeating so many attempts that it’s a shame you haven’t learned from them yet. Shame.

The same with climate change – stupidity beyond imagination.

I can’t believe it’s happening in the US. The products of a brainwashing system in schools are running the country. They vote!

They think that they have brains. Climate change! Democracy! Let’s ruin everything!

All you could build is concentration camps for yourself, my dear, and only if someone gives you the blueprints.

I loved it more and more as I read about it, and learned the history of the 20th century. I was also born in 1988, in Novosibirsk to be precise, so it is true I have no first-hand experience of the place. What few things I marginally remember were from the awful years of transition to freedom.

My first social experiences in the US were heavily tinged with wonder and chagrin at the inexplicable religiosity of the place (an assessment I made even in super-liberal Massachusetts, where my parents settled).

As many immigrants are, my family was politically aware, so I was following the Clinton impeachment + Kosovo NATO intervention in the news while my 10 year old peers were busy eating Fruit Roll-ups and listening to Britney Spears and N’Sync. I wondered why the GOP wanted to impeach a president for oral sex why it was even a big deal, why something so awesome, something I and my friends were beginning to talk about ourselves, was a cause for national crisis. I also wondered what where who and why about Kosovo. My parents, obviously not an unbiased source (but then again who isn’t?) told me that now that Russia was in chaos the US and its western vassals were trying to press their geopolitical advantage. The point being that if the Soviet Union was still around, American neoconservative mischief making wouldn’t have been possible.

9/11 happened a couple of months after my 13th birthday. I remember that day in middle school. I knew that earlier that year the hawkish Bush administration had unilaterally pulled out of the ABM-treaty. A little voice in my head kept chirping all throughout the school day «what if Putin really is some crazy ex-KGB guy; what if he was behind this? Oh #$%&! they’re gonna throw me and my family into internment camps!» After school, watching the news I felt colossal relief that I was wrong about the identity of the perpetrators. As America went into hypernationalist fervor, all I could do was keep my head down, go with the flow, and hope it would all go away at some point.

I excelled in my studies because it fed my sense of pride as a smart person, but I never *liked* work. I listened in disbelief as US politicians talked about «hard work» and the «dignity of work». Every time I wanted to shout at the TV «work is not good!». As I went through my teen years I began to think that how did this anti-intellectual, anti-sex, pro-work, pro-religion country «win» the Cold War? It was like a gigantic cosmic injustice had occurred, and I kept looking for signs that it could be redressed.

Luckily, it seems I’m not alone. Young people across the world are sick of the world older generations have bequeathed us. I love the values with regard to progress and the relationship between individual and state that the Soviet Union represented. Do I hate America? It’s complicated. Ronald Reagan’s America is an enemy nation to me. Barack Obama’s America was a mixed bag of excitement and disappointment. Bernie Sanders’ America would be my greatest ally.

I see you are at least honest, so thank you. It makes my job easier.

Let me explain certain things (as I see them) and if you are smart, you will hear me and think about them too, even if you don’t like them.

This has nothing to do with generational problems, so don’t make it look like «we – the young generation – know how to build a bright future, and you – the old generation – have left a disaster for us.» We’ve been there, it is not the case.

And here is why.

#1. Clinton. You didn’t get why oral sex was an issue. It WAS NOT. Lying under oath was THE ISSUE. Anyone can cheat, have whatever sex they want, even with animals, but if you’ve been caught, you must admit it.

The problem with Clinton was that the President of the USA LIED under OATH. Got it? Presidency is not a prize or a trophy. It comes with huge responsibilities. I don’t care if this moron can’t keep it in his pants, I don’t care who he had sex with, but I do care if he lies under oath, because he is the President. And if he lies… wow! Then why can’t we do whatever we want? Morality doesn’t exist. We become a wild society without any rules and ethics.

#2 Kosovo, wiping out Yugoslavia from the map. The West did it even without UN sanctions. It was an absolutely unacceptable fact, and we see that now. Well, many saw it in 1999.

#3 In your first experience in the US, you «were heavily tinged with wonder and chagrin at the inexplicable religiosity of the place.» Why do you care? If you are not religious – don’t go to any church or synagogue. If you are religious – you go. Nobody dictates you or forces you to do it. Or not to do it. You are free to make your own decision. What is wrong with that?

And in the Soviet Union, I, as a teacher, was obligated to stand near the church and write down the names of my students and their parents if I saw them near the church on Christmas or Passover. Why? Because we were supposed to be atheists, and if someone was not, that was too bad.

They would be punished, they might lose their job, and never find another one.

Well, I always refused to do it and was punished by my principal, but many people did it. Is this better than religious freedom here? How?

#4 You admit that you don’t like work. Does that mean that I have to pay for your existence? Health? Education? Food? No, I don’t think so.

You don’t like work, that is a key reason why you support Sanders. You think that his magic will allow you to live well and listen to that «voice in your head.» Sorry, it won’t happen. Unless Sanders personally pays for you all your (or his) life.

I am not planning to support you if you are young and healthy. Maybe asking your parents to do that is a better idea.

My questions are:

– if our society is so anti-intellectual, why has the US achieved so much? Why did you come here and not to North Korea?

– Anti-sex? LOL. You made this conclusion based on Clinton’s case? Read above.

– pro-work – you list it as a minus, because you are lazy yourself, as you admitted. You don’t enjoy work, achievements, or the results of what you build. You don’t like to make decisions. You prefer for someone to work for you and think for you. You are a SLAVE, my dear. Yours is the thinking typical of slaves.

– pro-religion – what is wrong with this if it gives me a choice: to pray or not to pray, to believe or not to believe.

You are a slave who LOVES totalitarian societies, because they leave no space for freedom, in any way. You love to submit, to follow, to obey.

I am so sorry that you are young and already a slave and that you became slave not in a concentration camp, where they used special techniques to break souls, but you became a slave in a free society.

It’s the saddest thing I ever saw. You hate freedom, because freedom is about choice, about making your own decisions. Freedom is responsibility; it is work of the body and soul.

You don’t like work.

And one last thing: you say that this society is very bad (anti-sex, pro-work, etc) and it’s unjust that it won the Cold War. You began to think. Maybe it makes sense to continue thinking and if you are lucky, or overcome your laziness, you will understand that what you consider to be minuses are actually huge pluses which helped to win the Cold War.
